BTAA Finalizes 2026-27 Open Access Publishing Agreement with Wiley

Researchers in the lab of Gabriella Lindberg are exploring an innovative approach to cartilage regeneration, as detailed in a paper published in the Wiley journal Advanced Materials Interfaces (Nov. 2022).

The University of Oregon Libraries is pleased to share that the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Center for Library Programs has secured an open publishing agreement with the academic publisher Wiley that provides open publishing opportunities for affiliated corresponding authors through December 31, 2027 while maintaining full read access to Wiley’s journal portfolio.

This new agreement reflects the consortium’s ongoing commitment to advancing open, accessible scholarship while ensuring sustainable access to high-quality research for faculty, students, staff and researchers.

Continued Support for Open Access Publishing

Under the new agreement, UO-affiliated corresponding authors can publish OA articles free of charge in Wiley hybrid OA journals. Manuscripts must be editorially accepted AND the author agreement completed by December 31, 2027.

UO-affiliated corresponding authors can also publish OA articles free of charge in Wiley Gold OA journals. However, unlike in previous years, there will be a capped number of article publishing credits available to the BTAA during this agreement. To guarantee coverage of article processing charges, all Gold OA manuscripts must be submitted by August 31, 2026 AND be editorially accepted with the author agreement completed by December 31, 2027.

For articles submitted after August 31, 2026, authors may need to seek funding support from other sources if they wish to publish in Wiley Gold OA journals.

For the duration of this agreement, authors who publish in a Wiley hybrid OA journal that flips to Gold will not be charged a fee.

The Alliance remains committed to maintaining sustainable, fair, open access publishing that balances the real costs of scholarly publishing. Authors should consult their subject or area librarian for assistance in navigating their publishing options.

"To date, our prior contract with Wiley has saved UO researchers over $300,000 in article processing fees,” said Vice Provost and University Librarian Alicia Salaz. “The value to our university is significant."

Continued Read Access to the Full Wiley Journal Portfolio

Wiley is a major publisher of academic journals; its portfolio includes Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Advanced Materials, Child Development, The Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth and many others, including the flagship journals for hundreds of professional societies.

In addition to publishing benefits, the extended contract provides the UO community with:

  • Unlimited reading access to the full Wiley journal portfolio
  • Perpetual access rights to subscribed content obtained during the agreement period

A Collaborative, Consortium-Wide Effort

This new agreement was made possible through the collaboration and support of Alliance member institutions, whose shared priorities guided the negotiation process. Together, the consortium continues to support an approach to scholarly publishing that balances access, affordability and long-term stewardship of academic resources.

"Joining forces with the other Big Ten Libraries to negotiate this deal is a clear win for the University of Oregon," said Salaz.

"Through our collective negotiating power, we have vastly expanded access for our UO community and maintained the BTAA’s 'no fees, no caps, no limits' approach for publishing in Wiley's hybrid OA journals. There is also a limited allocation to cover APCs in Wiley Gold OA journals. If you have questions about eligibility, journal coverage or how this agreement applies to your publications, our librarians are here to help you work through any issues."
