Government Information

About the Collection

As a U.S. Federal depository library, we provide reference assistance and facilitate access to a wide range of U.S. Federal government publications. Our documents collections are available to both academic and public users accessing government information.

In the United States, most newly published government information is available online. Computers that non-UO affiliated patrons may use are available in Knight Library for searching and accessing government-published information. Many electronic government publications may be searched for and accessed via the Library Catalog. See also the Libraries’ guide to Government Information

We also have an extensive print collection dating back to the 19th century.

Contact the Cartographic and Government Information Librarian for assistance with locating online and physical government publications.

Physical Documents

The physical Government Documents Collection is located on the main floor of the Knight Library on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. It contains publications from the U.S. government, the State of Oregon, and various Oregon city and county governments. It also contains documents published by some foreign governments and international agencies. All documents received after 1995, and most documents received prior to 1975 may be identified by searching the Library Catalog. Documents received between 1975 and 1995 may not be cataloged.  Our online guide will help you navigate resources and provide links for assistance.

People may retrieve items from the Documents Collection for themselves. UO affiliated users may also use interlibrary loan to get physical documents held at other libraries. Staff can assist with locating, understanding and using these collections.

Data Support

The UO Libraries is one of the four coordinating agencies of Oregon's State Data Center, affiliated with the U.S. Bureau of the Census. In that capacity, we assist the University and wider Oregon community in locating, retrieving, and using available statistical data from government sources.

The Libraries' Data Services group assists University of Oregon researchers with statistical analysis and the organization, management, and curation of data.
