What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
- Interlibrary Loan is a free service from UO Libraries that obtains research materials for UO students, faculty and staff. This service is primarily used to request library materials such articles, books, book chapters, or AV that UO does not own. Libraries worldwide participate in sharing their library's collection with other libraries through interlibrary loan.
- Articles and book chapters are generally available within 24 hours as a digital PDF download from your LibrarySearch account. Books and other physical materials are generally available within two to seven days. You will receive an email when your requested item is ready for pick up or download.
- Detailed instructions on how to place ILL requests can be found on the Requesting at UO Library Guide
- Use this link to manually fill out and submit a blank ILL request form
ILL Policies
- Due dates for ILL loans are set by the lending libraries and are included in your pickup notification email and in your LibrarySearch account.
- All ILL related notifications are sent via email.
- Most ILL material can be renewed. Borrowers may request a renewal of material under My Loans in your LibrarySearch account. You will be notified by email if your renewal has been approved or denied.
- Late, lost, and damaged ILL material is subject to fines and fees.
- UO Libraries subsidizes ILL borrowing fees for current UO faculty, students, and staff (up to $30 per request for students and staff, $60 per request for faculty). Costs greater than the subsidy are submitted to the requester for authorization before the request is filled. Costs higher than the subsidy will be charged to the borrower.
- There is no limit to the number of ILL requests that can be submitted; however, UO Libraries may not be able to process and/or subsidize a large number of transactions simultaneously from any one individual.
- Interlibrary Loan is for educational, curricular, and scholarly research needs. Please use the Popular Reading Collection or your local public library for recreational material.
- All ILL items are subject to recall by the lending library at any time, including during breaks between terms. If a borrowed item is recalled, an email notification with the new due date will be sent and borrowers will be expected to return the item by the new due date.
Copyright Statement
The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to create a photocopy or other reproduction of copyrighted material for its patrons or the patrons of other libraries. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a patron submits a request for and later uses a photocopy or reproduction provided by a library for purposes in excess of fair use, they may be liable for copyright infringement. UO Libraries reserves the right to refuse to submit duplication requests to other libraries if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would result in a violation of copyright law. Employees in Resource Sharing strive to ensure ILL requests comply with this policy and copyright statement and work directly with requesting patrons or cancel requests if there are questions or concerns about a request.
Community Borrowers
Community borrowers, e.g., Oregon Card borrowers and Alumni Association Members: Please use the General Community ILL Request Form to submit a request. Please note that there is a minimum $15 fee per ILL request for general community users.
