Sammie L. Morris is the Giustina Director of Special Collections and University Archives at University of Oregon. She has Master’s degrees in Library and Information Science (University of Texas) and Creative Writing (Stetson University), and her undergraduate degree is in English Literature (Northwestern State University). Prior to her current position, she served as Director of the Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections at Purdue University, Associate Dean for Special Collections at Florida State University, and Managing Archivist for the Dallas Museum of Art.

Morris’s research focuses primarily on teaching with primary sources, archival administration and leadership, preservation, and fundraising for archivists. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in a variety of professional publications and co-authored two books: Teaching with Archives (Society of American Archivists) and Purdue at 150: A Visual History of Student Life (Purdue University Press). She served on the SAA/ACRL RBMS committee that created the professional standard on primary source literacy. Her book on teaching with archives won the Society of American Archivists’ “One Book, One Profession” award. 

Morris has held leadership roles in the Society of American Archivists and the Midwest Archives Conference. She currently serves on the editorial board for American Archivist, the journal of the Society of American Archivists. She is an alumna and past director of the Archives Leadership Institute, administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). She is a past president of the Society of Indiana Archivists. Morris served on the editorial board for Archival Issues, the journal of the Midwest Archives Conference. She was appointed by Governor Daniels to the Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB), serving from 2006-2010.
