The University of Oregon mission statement asserts that "We value academic freedom, creative expression, and intellectual discourse."
As the University's primary resource for recorded ideas and scholarly information, the University of Oregon Libraries are dedicated to academic freedom, intellectual freedom, and equitable access to information. To promote the free exchange of ideas and serve the diverse educational, research, and information pursuits of the UO campus community, the Libraries are committed to providing the broadest possible access to information, services, and facilities. The pursuit and production of knowledge characteristic of a university setting require access to resources that reflect different points of view, disagreement, and controversy. Appearance of a resource in the collections or on display in the library environment does not necessarily mean that the Libraries advocate or endorse the ideas or statements found in that resource.
When questions, concerns, or challenges occur in relation to the Libraries’ collections or content, the Vice Provost and University Librarian (VPUL) is ultimately responsible for decisions to add or remove the resources in question. The VPUL may convene an ad hoc advisory group, if necessary, to address challenges regarding library resources.
