DeArmond MakerSpace Policies

There are a variety of policies related to MakerSpace use. We've broken them into several categories below. When you use the MakerSpace, you agree that you have reviewed these policies, and that you will abide by them.

Usage: who may use the space and when

  • The Price Science Commons Research Library MakerSpace is open to University of Oregon students, staff, and faculty. Members must have a current valid UO identification card and must pass a safety and use test prior to accessing the room. The safety test is linked on the DeArmond MakerSpace home page.
  • In special circumstances, non-UO students attending UO sponsored summer camps or related UO sponsored activities may utilize the space. However, all non-UO students under the age of 18 must have parental permission. Adult supervision is required at all times in these situations.
  • The MakerSpace usually opens when the PSC library in open and closes no later than 1 hour prior to the closing of the library. The current hours are listed on the DeArmond MakerSpace home page.
  • Equipment in the MakerSpace may be reserved in one hour increments for as much time is needed by using the MakerSpace calendar, which will be available once the MakerSpace is fully operational. When equipment is reserved, other users should not use it.
  • The full space may be reserved for a full term of classes. The space may also be reserved for shorter periods if the classes are scheduled at least 72 hours in advance of the needed date and the MakerSpace is open during those hours. Reserved time cannot exceed 6 hours on any given day.
  • The space is primarily used for working with plastic, paper/cardboard, and wood materials. In some cases you will be able to provide your own materials; in others you'll need to buy parts or materials from us.

Courtesy: what do we expect of you and what can you expect of other users

  • Students are responsible for returning equipment to the appropriate storage containers, reporting broken equipment, and cleaning the common use area after working in the area. Failure to do so may result in loss of access to the facility.
  • UO is not responsible for anything left behind in the MakerSpace, so you should be sure to take your materials with you when you are done. If you notice another user forgetting something, you should let them know!
  • Since we don't allow headphones for safety reasons, we do allow users to play music at a reasonable volume and with reasonable attention to whether other users are bothered by it. If your music is bothering others, please turn it off or lower the volume as appropriate.
  • If you observe another user working in a manner you understand to be unsafe, you may politely offer assistance, but if your help is not accepted please take your observation to desk staff who will determine whether and how to intervene. If you observe an emergency, please notify staff immediately.
  • If you realize a piece of equipment is broken and is not labeled as such, please notify staff so that we can both flag the item as unusable (or remove it) and commence repairs.
  • Larger files take longer to save and print; do not wait until the end of your time to save or print, especially if another user or a class has the time reserved immediately after you. If your job fails, you should check for other users before restarting it if you are not positive it will be completed in time for the next user.
  • The culture we want to support is one of cooperation, safe exploration, and creativity.

Safety

Please note that if your behavior is unsafe, or we determine you are using machines for which you have not completed training, we reserve the right to remove your name from the list of people allowed to use the space for the remainder of the term. We would prefer to never impose this penalty.

  • MakerSpace patrons must review the instruction guides for each piece of powered equipment that is desired to be used and attend training and pass a proficiency test on the same equipment. See our training schedule.
  • Safety glasses are to be worn at all times in the MakerSpace. A supply is available in the room.
  • Appropriate clothing must be worn in the facility; this includes closed toed shoes (no sandals), no loose cuffed clothing around the wrists, no dangling necklaces or bracelets (necklaces can be tucked into a shirt).
  • Long hair must be pulled back so that is does not dangle in front of equipment or get caught in equipment. This also applies to long beards.
  • General usage and safety guidelines will be posted at the entrance of the MakerSpace and specific safety issues regarding each piece of equipment will be posted at specific equipment stations.
  • Powered tools in our space are largely for working with wood, paper, cloth, and plastic. There is limited equipment for working with metal.
  • Food and drink are prohibited in the MakerSpace. Please stow your lunch in your backpack or bag.
  • If you are having trouble with the equipment, please contact staff at our circulation desk.
  • The use of headphones in the facility is not allowed but use of speaker is O.K.
  • All start-up and shut-down procedures for each piece of equipment must be followed every time. Do not leave soldering irons on and unattended, even for a few minutes.
  • Maximum room capacity is 20 people. If the room is full, we won't allow more people in.
  • In case of a medical emergency call 9-1-1 and then notify desk staff of the situation.
  • During the hours of 8 am - 4 pm patrons with non-emergency medical issues may go to the campus health center. Inform desk staff, who will call ahead and tell Campus Health why we are sending a patron to their facility.
  • In case of after-hours non-emergency medical issues with staff or patrons where a medical evaluation is appropriate, ask desk staff to call UOPD to have them call medical non-emergency transport (Cascade Medical Transport etc.). Medical non-emergency transport will take a patron to a local 24 hr. medical service such as Urgent Care and bring them back to campus afterwards.
