Who can check out and where?
Current UO students, staff, or faculty presenting UO ID may check out a Dell PC laptop for 4 hours. Laptops are available at the PSC Library and Knight Library Checkout desks. UO Portland Library also provides several laptops for those based in Portland.
Software and Saving Files
Software
The laptops have the same software as library academic workstations, including the Microsoft Office suite. You may not alter the machine's software or file structures, which includes downloading software.
Saving Files
The laptops delete files every time they shut down, and when you return the laptop it will be shut down. This means you need to save your work to storage outside the laptop.
Options include:
- Uploading to your UO OneDrive account
- Uploading to your personal Cloud Storage
- Using a thumbdrive
- Emailing small documents to yourself
Renewing Laptops
- If laptops are in low demand, renewals will be granted. You need to come to the Library in person to ask to renew. Renewals can’t be made over the phone or email.
- A laptop checked out near closing time will be due the next day the library is open.
Fees
Late Fines
- Laptops are subject to high late fines, $20 per hour, for any fraction of the hour late. "Fraction of an hour" means any part of the subsequent hour; for example, if the laptop is due at 9:15 and you return it at 10:17, you would be assessed a 2-hour ($40) charge.
- If you repeatedly return machines late, we may block you from checking out laptops in the future.
Damages
- We visually inspect the machine before checkout for damages.
- If you damage the laptop, you will be charged for repair. The amount charged will depend on the nature and extent of the damages. In extreme cases the full replacement cost of the laptop may be assessed.
Appeals
If you wish to appeal a fine because the laptop was returned late or damaged due to unusual circumstances, begin at the check out desk where you checked the laptop out or file an appeal using the form below.
It is each borrower's responsibility to understand UO Libraries' borrowing policies and to monitor their LibrarySearch and ILLiad accounts. If you believe library charges have accrued on your account in error, or you were unable to return items on time due to extenuating circumstances, you may appeal those charges using the form below.
Submissions will be reviewed by library staff and you can expect a response within one week. The details of this form are confidential, but if you would prefer to speak to library staff in person, please call 541-346-3065 or visit any UO Libraries check out desk.
