Barb received her Masters in Library and Information Science from University of California Berkeley and her M.S. in Range Management and B.S. in Biological Sciences from University of California Davis. Before coming to University of Oregon in 1992 she worked for the California Academy of Sciences as Director of the Biodiversity Resource Center, a library on the public floor of the museum. Her research interests focus on open-access publishing, visualization of data via the geo-referencing of citations, best practices for marine science libraries and issues of concern to solo librarians. She is a regular presenter at IAMSLIC (International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers) conferences, has published book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and is co-editor of the open-access resource Oregon Estuarine Invertebrates: Rudys' Illustrated Guide to Common Species.
