Biographical Sketch

John K. Hillers (1843–1925) was born in Germany and emigrated to the US in 1852. He served as a New York policeman and Union Army soldier, before joining Major John Wesley Powell in 1871 as a boatman on Powell's second journey down the Colorado River. Hillers became the expedition photographer, and followed Powell to the Smithsonian Institution\'s newly-founded Bureau of American Ethnology. In 1878 and 1881, he accompanied Frank Hamilton Cushing and a team of Smithsonian scientists on a trip to Zuni and other Southwestern pueblos, the first specifically anthropological expedition in America. Although he officially retired in 1900, he continued to take photographs for the Bureau and the U.S. Geological Service until 1919.

Scope and Content Note
