The Round House book cover cropped5. Get a head start on Common Reading

The University of Oregon’s Common Reading book for 2017 is The Round House by Louise Erdrich, winner of the 2012 National Book Award for Fiction. “Told from the perspective of a young adult narrator, with a great deal of humor and warmth, the book deals directly with questions of tribal sovereignty, federal Indian policy, sexual violence, social justice and individual accountability.”

Everyone will be talking about this book come fall:

March of the Penguins4. Chill out with some snowy DVDs

Crank up the A.C. and enjoy a cool movie. Widescreen views of winter wonderlands abound in our DVD collections: genres include everything from ethnography to environmental documentaries to famous feature films. Got access to a projector, an extension cord, and a bedsheet? Turn that laundry into a “screen” in your yard and host an outdoor movie party!

For sports and recreation in Oregon, there’s no better time than summer (close runners-up: winter, spring, and fall). UO Libraries is your go-to source for “How-to” guidebooks that will help you master the skills needed to conquer the courts, brave the waves, outsmart the fish, and beat the heat.

Want to take pictures of this once-in-a-lifetime event? Sign up for the UO Libraries' DSLR Solar Filter Workshop in the DeArmond MakerSpace, Wednesday, August 9, 3 - 5 p.m.

Also arriving (hopefully) at Price Science Commons & Research Library in time for the main event: a Total Solar Eclipse Kit from NASA! Stay tuned. (It’s supposed to ship out shortly after August 11.)

In the meantime, NASA has a website chock full of great eclipse information, including an app you can download!
