Is the company you are researching a publicly held (traded on a stock exchange), privately owned, or subsidiary of a publicly held organization? COMPANY MISSION STATEMENTS

  • Company mission statements, philosophy and objectives for the forthcoming years are often stated in the corporate annual report. If the mission statement is not a section of an annual report, check the section of Corporate Statement or Chairman's Statement. Look for words such as "our vision", "looking forward", "our objective" etc.
  • Search Google using company and mission statements as keywords.

INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATIONS

NAICS is a 6-digit code developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, but used internationally. Use the Keyword or Code search to look up codes and get descriptions. NAICS is also available via NAICS Association

SIC is a system of 4-digit codes that attempts to classify all business establishments by the types of products or services. Even though NAICS officially replaced the SIC system in 1997, SIC codes still are used in some resources. Use the keyword or code search.

INDUSTRY NORMS & RATIOS

eStatement Studies is the online version of the Annual Statement Studies produced by the Risk Management Association (RMA). It provides composite performance metrics derived directly from the financial statements of financial institutions' borrowers and prospects. It includes two publications: Financial Ratios Benchmarks on over 760 industries, Industry Default Probabilities and Cash Flow Measures.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is a comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. Includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, and proceedings from conferences. Also has some journal abstracts, books, links to related web sites, maps, and country data.

EIU provides data and forecasts about political, economic, and business climates of various regions and up to 200 countries, as well as related news, analysis, and risk factor assessments.

Coverage includes the Country Commerce, Country Finance, Global Forecasting Service, and ViewsWire.

The globalEDGE web site is a rich, FREE, source of information on doing business internationally. In addition to country statistics and industry information, it includes links to information on country-specific and regional business customs and etiquette.

  1. For a valuable overview of the culture of your country of interest, click "Get Global Insights" . Use the drop down menu in the Insights by Country category to select a country of interest and click "GO" then "Culture".

IMF eLibrary is a statistical database from the International Monetary Fund.

The library subscribes to International Financial Statistics which contains country financial data (exchange rates, foreign exchange, SDRs, money supply, capital supply, commodities, etc.) dating back to 1948.

The Global Road Warrior database covers 175 countries and addresses 22 categories of interest to travelers, including business culture, communications, demographics, money and banking, points of interest, security, society and culture, tips for businesswomen, transportation, and travel essentials. It also includes maps and photographs.
 

Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands offers essential international business etiquette practices and culture cues. It includes more than 70 country profiles.

OECD iLibrary is the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) online library of statistical databases, books, and periodicals. Publications include country studies, forecasting publications, reports, periodicals, and socio-economic databases. Topics covered include agriculture, developing economies, education, employment, energy, environment, migration, social issues, and sustainable development.

World Development Indicators includes economic and socio-economic data from more than 230 countries, incorporating data from the World Bank publications: World Tables, Social Indicators of Development, World Population Projections, the World Development Report, and the World Bank Atlas.

EIU Country Commerce provides details on operating conditions, commercial laws, and the regulatory framework in more than 50 countries. Each report offers key economic indicators, such as level of foreign direct investment, exports as a percentage of GDP, and chief trading partners. The reports also contain current lists of key contacts at banks, ministries, chambers of commerce, and other key institutions.

Profiling over 50 countries, EIU Country Finance provides information on a country's banking and investment systems, regulations, associated services, governmental policies, financial markets, and more.

Academic Search Premier is a multi-disciplinary database with a large collection of peer-reviewed full-text journals. This database offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: business, social sciences, humanities, science, education, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more.

Business Source Complete provides ull-text business journals and hundreds of scholarly, peer-reviewed journals covering all aspects of business. Other resources include financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, book digests, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses, and more.

EconLit is a comprehensive indexed bibliography with selected abstracts of the world's economic literature produced by the American Economic Association.

Lexis-Nexis Academic provides full text access to news, business and company information, and legal and medical information.

Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for more than 40 U.S. and international newspapers, including the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Times (London), Toronto Star, etc. The database also contains selective full text of more than 335 regional American newspapers. In addition, full-text television and radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, FOX News, NPR, etc.

Regional Business News provides full text to nearly 100 regional U.S. and Canadian business publications (including titles from Crain Communications).
