Baseball: Researching the National Pastime

Mel Krause

One of the best players on Kirsch’s 1949 team was a pitcher by the name of Mel Krause, whose 14 complete games in three years stands third in the Oregon record books. Serving as the Oregon baseball coach from 1971 through 1981, Krause led the Ducks to their last Northern Division title in 1974. Finishing his career with a record of 218-220, the 53-year old Krause was the last person to coach UO Varsity baseball. In the final two games played at Howe Field, Krause and his Ducks lost a doubleheader to the University of Washington on Wednesday, May 14, 1981.
