Developing an Online Course in Canvas Workshop | Spring 2018

Teaching an online class? Please join us for a hands-on workshop series for developing an online course in Canvas, we welcome all faculty and graduate employees.


Workshop Breakdown:

Part 1: Step into Online Teaching with Backward Design
April 17, 2018 | 3:30pm - 4:30pm | Knight Library  42

Participants will use Backwards Design to create clear objectives for their course with aligned materials and activities. They will apply the principals of Backwards Design to their online course using the Canvas environment.

  • Create measurable objectives for the course
  • Determine appropriate activities for engaged learning that is aligned with course objectives
  • Use objective aligned content for the course
  • Design objective focused assessments

Part 2: Stepping Through Your Canvas Course 
April 24, 2018 | 3:30pm - 4:30pm | Knight Library  42

In this workshop we will focus on getting students started in your online course. We will give you best practice guidelines for setting up your course, introducing students to the structure of the course, and how to make the navigation streamlined and efficient for your students so they can spend time on task, engaging with the course materials.  

Part 3: Keep Students Moving with an Engaging Learning Environment  
May 1, 2018 | 3:30pm - 4:30pm | Knight Library 42

This workshop will build on backward design theory.  It will provide participants an opportunity to explore how online learning best practices regarding the learning environment and instructor presence can be implemented.  Specific tools and activities will be presented. 

  • Identify online course tools that promote learner-to-learner interaction
  • Identify online course tools that promote learner-to-instructor interaction
  • Identify engaging course materials that can be used in an online course to enhance learning and interaction
  • Describe and implement a communication plan for use in their online course

Part 4: Getting Your Students to the Finish Line with Authentic Assessments 
May 8, 2018 | 3:30pm - 4:30pm | Knight Library  42

Participants will engage with assessment types and purposes, creating assessments in the Canvas environment, and academic integrity principles.  

  • Apply knowledge of assessment purposes to inform instructional decisions
  • Determine which assessments are appropriate for your course
  • Create assessments in the Canvas environments
  • Apply academic integrity issues to your assessment practices
