Classroom Assistive Listening Systems

Table of Contents

What is an Assistive Listening System (ALS) and Assistive Listening Device (ALD)?
An Assistive Listening System (ALS) is a transmitter integrated with the room's AV system to transmit any classroom audio such as microphone(s) or program audio to an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) over an FM transmission. ALDs function as an amplifier that bring any of room audio directly into the ear via an earphone, headphones, or a Neckloop Telecoil Coupler for Hearing Aids.

The Classroom Technology Services team at University of Oregon is responsible for installing and supporting assistive listening systems (ALS) to general pool and joint controlled classrooms that have a microphone installed.

How to use the Assistive Listening Devices?
The exact brand and model in the classroom may differ slightly, but all function the same. Please review the full instructions for Using Assistive Listening Devices in UO Classrooms.

What UO classrooms have Assistive Listening Systems installed?
Currently, any general pool or joint-controlled classroom that has a microphone will have an ALS installed. Some microphone-equipped classrooms with older technology will recieve an ALS when the technology is refreshed.

If your class is scheduled in a room that does not have an ALS installed, please request an Equipment Reservation. Our team can set up a portable system for either a day or on a term-basis if needed. We ask that you please request a portable ALS as early as possible (preferably at least 3 business days). Additionally, we collaborate with the Accessible Education Center whom may be able to make additional accommodations if needed.

If an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) cannot be found in the classroom, please submit a ticket (if non-urgent) or call us at 541-346-3091; if it is urgent, we can run a spare ALD out to the classroom to be used until the installed-ALDs can be located or replaced.
