April 7, 14, 21, 28 (9:30am-noon)

Knight Library Browsing Room (Room 106)

Sarah Bakewell's new best-selling biography of Michel de Montaigne is entitled How to Live.  That's the subject of Montaigne's Essais, which is on every list of Great Books.  A contemporary of Shakespeare, Montaigne invented the personal essay.  "Who touches this book touches the author," he says; also, famously, "What do I know?"  Bakewell's book is an excellent guide.     Instructor: James Earl (English)
