Check out: W. Harry Hembree papers

W. Harry Hembree was a ship captain and master ship builder in Oregon. His family, and the Kellogg family, owned and built ships and created a freight transportation company in the Willamette Valley. The W. Harry Hembree Papers consist of the retelling of Hembree’s grandfather’s 1843 overland journey, a 1947 interview in which Hembree reminisces about his family and his life, and Hembree’s 1912 log of the Althea voyage from Portland, Oregon to Alaska.

Delta Nu Alpha is an international organization dedicated to transportation and logistics. The collection contains University of Oregon chapter records that document the functions, activities, and people of the organization. Records include correspondence, newsletters, meeting minutes, membership files, national materials, subject files on transportation topics, and photographs, 1947-1958.

William J. Smith (dates unknown) grew up in Detroit, Oregon, at the turn of the century, and went into the family timber business. The Smith & Smith Mill processed timber in the Macky Place area. The collection consists of 69 photographs documenting the mill, the original town of Detroit, and landscape, and include several shots of the transportation of a donkey engine across a river and up a steep slope in 1911.

Augustus Ripley Burbank was a businessman in the West and Midwest. The A.R. Burbank papers consist of three volumes of diaries. The diaries discuss overland travel to California, the growth of Portland and Lafayette, Oregon, personal issues and the growth and development of railroads in the Willamette Valley. The frequency of the diary entries varies from nonexistent for many years to almost daily.

James Taylor Gray (1852-1928) was a ship designer and transportation magnate involved in railroads and shipping in Oregon and Alaska. The collection consists of correspondence, business papers, plans and specifications for steamboat designs and parts, and photographs.
