Newly Available Collection: James Webb Young papers

James Webb Young (1886-1973) had a long career in advertising as the head of the Advertising Council, as key figure with J. Walter Thompson company, and with varied national and government agencies. The collection (1933-1972) contains printed and published documents pertaining to Young’s career in advertising and also speeches, photographs, working notes, personal scrapbooks, Christmas cards designed by Young, autobiographical material, and files regarding his professional service and employment.

The collection contains a letter dated January 18, 1905 from Mary Phelps Montgomery of Washington, D.C, to Walter F. Burrell of Portland, Oregon. In the letter, Montgomery tells of her experience watching Senator John H. Mitchell’s speech in defense of his indictment.

George Henry Williams (1823-1910) was an Oregon politician, serving as the chief justice of the Territory of Oregon, as a Republican representing Oregon in the U.S. Senate, as Attorney General of the United States, and as Mayor of Portland. The collection contains an address by Williams delivered at the Marquam Grand Theater in Portland, Oregon on May 16, 1896.

The collection (1865-1868) contains financial records, telegrams, and other papers of the Ashland, Oregon tollhouse station.

Archibald E. Roberts (1915-2005) was a retired lieutenant colonel and founder of the Committee to Restore the Constitution. The collection (1953-1994) consists of Roberts’ correspondence, speeches, and writings as well as numerous boxes of printed and audio-visual propaganda from Robert’s personal collection.
