Newly Available Collection: Willamette Falls Canal Company legal notice

The collection contains articles of incorporation and a legal notice, dated August 25, 1865 on behalf of the Willamette Falls Canal company stating their right-of-way to build a canal to ship goods over the Willamette Falls. The notice argues that the People’s Transportation Company must cease their work building a canal because such work infringes upon the rights and property of the Willamette Falls Canal Company.

Joseph Nathan Teal (1858-1929) was an Oregon rancher, lawyer, investor, and civic leader who was an advocate of waterways development and served as U.S. Shipping Commissioner from 1920-1921. The collection (1894-1917) contains fourteen volumes of scrapbooks regarding Oregon politics, Portland water, transportation in Oregon, taxes, the railroad, Celilo canal, and navigation of the Columbia River.
