Newly Available Collection: Otto Eisenschiml manuscripts

Otto Eisenschiml (1880-1963) was a chemist and an American Civil War historian who published books and articles regarding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The collection (1960-1963) contains manuscripts, notes, proofs and related correspondence of the books, Hidden Faces of the Civil War and O.E.: Historian Without an Armchair.

Newly Available Collection: Rollin Simeon Belknap letter

In 1870, Rollin Simeon Belknap claimed a hot springs site located in Oregon, in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains, that is now known as Belknap Hot Springs. The collection contains a letter of June 5, 1872, from Belknap to A. Gibbs, asking Gibbs to pass on a bottle of water (that was sent with the letter) to a chemist for tests, as the springs he found were said to be good for healing. (The bottle is not included in the collection)

Newly Available Collection: Ruth Hopson Keen papers

Ruth Hopsen Keen (1906-1998) was a naturalist who studied the Collier Glacier, an educator and Geology professor, an author, and the first female to become a (Park) Ranger Naturalist at Crater Lake National Park. The collection (1930s-1970s) contains correspondence, diaries/journals, a Crater Lake Ranger Naturalist manual, Geological Society publications (of which Keen was president), geology and mineralogy publications, Keen’s teaching records from the UO and dissertation, printed matter, reports, subject files, maps, slides, negatives, glass lantern slides, audio, film, and photographs.

In 1936, the State Board of Higher Education combined the Oregon State Museum of Anthropology, the Condon Museum of Geology, the University Herbarium, and the Museum of Zoology into the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History. The collection contains correspondence, reports, meeting notes and minutes, Herbarium historical documents,  glass negatives, photographs, a Museum of Anthropology accessions/inventory journal, and a negative of Fort Rock sandals.

The Pine Mountain observatory operates under the University of Oregon’s Department of Physics and under a special use permit from the Deschutes National Forest. The collection consists of construction and dedication records, committee and staff minutes, correspondence and reports, office files, guest registries, and a 2-volume history from 1963-1997.

Sigma Xi  was founded in 1886 (nationally) to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. The Society of the Sigma Xi, University of Oregon Chapter, was founded in 1923 after a two year effort. Collection contains office files, correspondence, financial records, fraternity records, chapter book, and historical information.
