Frederick Steiwer (1883-1939) became a lawyer who served as Oregon district attorney 1912-1916, was elected to the State Senate, served in WWI, and was elected to the U.S. Senate (1926-1938). The collection contains political campaign records, army records, correspondence and clippings, 1911-1933.

The Department of Military Science was established at the University of Oregon in 1919, although the school had sponsored military training through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program before the creation of a Military Science department. The collection includes department files and ROTC/Air Force ROTC information, correspondence and memoranda, program and academic requirement information, audiotapes, material by John Leader, scrapbooks, photographs, clippings, newsletters, student orientation and training, and protest information, 1917-1972.

Amos Fries (1873-1963) was an engineer, served in the Philippines during the Moro uprising, organized the Chemical Warfare Service, and was an advocate for conservative causes. Harold Hanne Elarth (b. 1885) was a U. S. Army officer who served in the Philippine Constabulary and rose to the rank of Lt. Col. The collection contains research for Elarth’s book on the Philippine Constabulary, Philippine Constabulary Officers Association history, a diary, letterpress copybooks, a Philippine Constabulary manual, photographs, and correspondence.

Joseph S. Pennell (1903-1963), novelist and short story writer, is most known for his book on the Civil War, The History of Rome Hanks and Kindred Matters, where he “depicted the lives of ordinary soldiers with gripping realism.” The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, literary manuscript material, an autobiography, idea notebook, published newspaper pieces, photographs, and the personal correspondence, diary and manuscripts of Elizabeth (nee Horton) Pennell.

Laura J. Bock was a student at the University of Oregon during the 1960s who took part in civil rights activism and anti-vietnam protests at the university. The collection contains political ephemera such as flyers and posters, memos, buttons, and underground newsletters and publications, as well as Bock’s personal notes, correspondence, and an oral history (with transcript).

Charles F. Bulfinch lived in Weston, Oregon. By age 17 he had joined the army. The Charles F. Bulfinch Papers consist of a dairy of his 1898 trip to Alaska and the Klondike region. The trip began in March and he returned home to Weston in October of the same year. The diary contains daily entries, sketches, food recipes, and one photograph of Bulfinch at age 17.

The Taylor family papers include a journal of an overland trip from Rockford, Illinois to Oregon in 1853 by Rachel Taylor; a diary of D. H. Taylor on military service against Indians, January 1862-May 1862; and a genealogy of the Taylor family and related families.
