Newly Available Collection: Benjamin Young papers

Benjamin Young was a salmon canner, banker, real estate promoter of Astoria, Oregon and worked for the British America Packing Company. The collection contains letterpress copy books that include personal and business correspondence, a record book of the Ben Young Land Company, a scrapbook, and twenty-one volumes of British America Packing Company journals, cash books, letterpress copy books, ledgers, and invoice books, 1882-1906.

The University of Oregon began offering a business curriculum in 1884. Originally called the School of Commerce, it was renamed the School of Business Administration in 1920, and was renamed Lundquist College of Business (LCB) in honor of alumnus and generous donor Charles H. Lundquist, in 1993.

The collection contains records from the Dean’s Office, from departments, and from work with local businesses. Material includes economic studies, correspondence, annual reports, surveys, questionnaires, and staff meeting minutes.

Charles Ellicott Johnson (1920-1969) worked as an accountant before serving at the University of Oregon as Head of the Department of Accounting and Business Statistics in 1959, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 1963, and finally as Acting President of the University in 1968. The collection includes biographical material, correspondence, speeches, reports, schedules, publications, and clippings relating to his professional career as an accountant and to his positions at the University of Oregon.

Parsons, whose family currently continues to own and operate the orchard. The collection contains correspondence, business and financial files regarding Hillcrest Orchard and other financial holdings of Reginald H. Parsons, as well as material regarding Parsons’ personal, family, and civic interests.
