The collection contains a letter dated January 7, 1884, written by Levi Leland of Washington Territory to “Bro” in which he states that he appreciates the free railroad passes, and is willing to be governor of Alaska. The letter may have been written to John H. Mitchell.

Thomas R. Cornelius, was an Oregon pioneer and a member of the Oregon Mounted Volunteers during the Cayuse and Yakima Indian Wars. The collection contains a deposition given by Cornelius on January 1, 1884 regarding the Oregon Mounted Volunteers.

The collection contains a letter dated February 24, 1884, from H. L. Barret, of Birch Creek, Oregon to Thomas R. Cornelius. In the letter, Barret reports on snow and wagon travel in the mountains, that the oxen are doing well and are soon to be worth more, and that he is using a hand saw for a table, which he says is an improvement over a rock.

Newly Available Collection: Matthew Paul Deady letter to Melvin C. George

Matthew Paul Deady (1824-1893) was a lawyer, politician, and judge in the Oregon Territory. Deady became Oregon’s first U.S. District Court judge in 1859, a position he retained until his death. The collection contains a letter dated April 11, 1884, from Deady, of Portland, Oregon to Melvin C. George, of Washington, D.C. In the letter, Deady states that he hopes the judicial salary bill passes, and he comments on public reaction to a measure forfeiting railway grants.

The collection contains a written legal agreement dated November 5, 1883, between T. F. Williams and G. W. Williams, both of Cascade Locks, Oregon, and also William Haaker of the Importing and Fish Preservation House, in New York City, concerning the sale of sturgeon and caviar.

The collection contains two letters written on stationery from the Third Auditor’s Office of the U.S. Treasury Department regarding supplies allegedly furnished by Messrs. Field and Blakely during the “Oregon and Washington Indian War of 1955-1956.” The letters are dated March 30, 1881, and March 22, 1876.
