The Umatilla County (Oregon) Assessor was responsible for assessing all property in the country for tax purposes. The collection contains assessment rolls for 1883-1884; 1886; 1888-1889; 1897.

Newly Available Collection: World Without War Council records

World Without War Council began as the group “Turn Toward Peace” around 1963, and worked to coordinate the efforts of peace organizations for more effective action; the new name was chosen in 1967 to help clarify that it was a council made up of many organizations set up to work for long-term change. The collection (1960-1973) contains correspondence, association files, subject files, periodicals and newsletters.

The Committee to Keep Firemen Police and Teachers on the Job, directed by Roy N. Vernstrom, was formed to defeat Oregon state ballot measure number 7 (the 1 1/2% tax limitation), on the ballot November 5, 1968. The collection (1968) contains campaign materials including correspondence, advertising, memoranda, statistics, financial accounting, opinion surveys, and a study of the campaign by Verstrom.

Lake Bechtell (1886 -1977) was a lawyer who became City Attorney of Prineville, then was elected to the City Council in 1921, to the office of Mayor in 1925, and served as District Attorney for Crook County, 1928 to 1953. The collection contains legal files regarding livestock companies, grazing and irrigation districts, mining claims, and railroads, 1918-1963.

In 1922, the West Coast Lumberman’s Association sued the Abilene and Southern Railway Co. regarding “unjust and unreasonable” lumber rates. The collection (1922-1924) contains testimonies, briefs, exhibits, lumber company statistics and research, and correspondence used in the case.

The Krome Corporation organized in 1941, acquired mineral property, and constructed a plant for the concentration of chromite ore in southwestern Oregon. The collection contains files from corporation attorney William E. Walsh and files include information on land acquisition, sales, and correspondence with members of congress, 1941-1956.

Publication of original fiction in the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune began with the September 21, 1919 issue and for the next fifty years, fiction (daily serials, Sunday serials, and short stories) was a major feature of the Chicago Tribune Newspapers Syndicate, later the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate, Inc. The collection (1919-1969) contains correspondence with literary agents and authors, as well as manuscripts, a list of short stories and serials, serial synopses, and sales records, 1919-1969.

Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA) is a non-profit trade association comprising public/people’s utility districts, electric cooperatives, municipalities, and crown corporations in the Western U.S. and Canada. The collection (1948-1963) consists of correspondence, material regarding power and service plans of electric cooperatives, application and hearing material for the Mountain Sheep-Pleasant Valley hydro-electric project on the Middle Snake River, and a file regarding the Oregon Electric Consumers council.
