Newly Available Collections: Laurean and Eutaxian Societies’ records

The Laurean and Eutaxian societies were student literary groups at the University of Oregon, founded in 1876 and 1877, respectively, and together they donated a book collection to UO in 1877 would become the beginning of a University library. The collection contains meeting minutes, treasurer’s and cash books, roll call, secretary’s book, correspondence, a scrapbook, and volumes of the joint publication, The Reflector.

Founded in 1899, the Oregon Daily Emerald (ODE) is a student-run independent daily campus newspaper at the University of Oregon. The collection contains photographs, negatives, and slides, assignment ledger, ODE issues, minutes, reports, correspondence, computer tape (HP 3000 system tape) and computer printouts, and office files.

Carolyn Gage (1952- ) is a lesbian feminist playwright, author, performer, director, and activist. The collection contains manuscripts of plays, essays, and fiction writing, business and personal correspondence, financial records and contracts, an autobiography, reviews, clippings, and promotional material, conference material, personal papers, photographs, audio tapes, and published works.

Newly Available Collection: Carrie K. Sweetser paintings

Carrie K. Sweetser (1863-1952) was a watercolorist, a life-long diarist, and her botanist husband’s (UO Botany professor, Albert Raddin Sweetser) devoted travel companion. The collection contains watercolor paintings of botany subjects, including wildflowers and fungi.

Newly Available Collection: U.S. General Land Office notice to settlers

Established in 1812, the General Land Office (GLO) sought to meet the needs of settlers during the western expansion of the United States. The collection consists of a photostat copy of a notice to settlers put out by the General Land Office in 1853.

Newly Available Collection: George Allingham letter to William Allingham

George Allingham ( d.1873) was a resident of Warren County, Illinois, whose son, William, emigrated to Oregon in 1850.  The collection consists of a photostat copy of a letter from the elder Allingham to his son.

Haywood P. Sconce was a Baptist minister who served congregations in Oregon and Washington, and in 1954 founded and became director of Christian Celebrity Tyme, a religious radio program. The papers include sermons, outlines, and sermon notes, correspondence, manuscripts of short stories and articles, memorabilia, and Christian Celebrity Tyme materials including programs, notes, and recordings.
