Dan Powell: Studio B series
8x10 black & white contact prints, 1982-83
This series was created concurrent with the Studio A series. The two series were very similar in many ways, though this series utilized writing more, both in the taken image and on the surface of the negative which when contact printed showed up as white marks. Scratching on the negative was also done which showed up as black marks on the print. Being B&W rather than color changed the esthetic considerations and this series tended to be more simple in its relationships, stark, often involving plant forms, figurative images, and words. They were more close up, with less of a sense of the environment around them. These images were contact printed on Kodak azo paper at the darkroom that I was using in Soho.
Studio A and Studio B series both existed only as 8x10 contact prints and were never enlarged. The printing of Studio A series took place in Syracuse, New York while I was an artist in residence at Lightwork in August of 1983. The title of these series reflects an ambition to create different studio series that ran the gamut of the alphabet, which I soon abandoned in favor of more expressionist headings as my work changed.
