Collection number: PH287

Extent: 1 linear ft. (3 containers)

Abstract

The Roelofson family descended from a Hessian soldier named Lawrence Roelofson, Sr. (?-1818). Marriages to John Tucker Scott (1809-?), Neill Johnson (1802-1851), Benjamin Franklin Hall (dates unknown), and Thomas Porterfield Jack (1821-1906) established related branches of the family, many of whom moved to Oregon as pioneers and settled in Marion County. The collection consists of portraits of family members, primarily 19th century, and group portraits or snapshots from the Oregon clan's family gatherings, which began around 1900 and continued through the 1950s

Biographical Sketch

David C. Duniway (1912-1993) was a member of an Oregon pioneer clan that included his grandmother, suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway, and her brother, Oregonian publisher Harvey Scott. David established the State Archives of Oregon and was active in local history and in personal genealogical research. He served as archivist of the Roelofson-Johnson family. The following is a brief summary of key documents from his papers and should not be considered comprehensive.

According to documents compiled and summarized by David Duniway and his cousin, Wylie Wayne Rolofson (1884-1973), the Roelofson family (also spelled Rolofson, Roleson, Ralston and many other variants) descends from Lawrence Roelofson (c. 1730s-1818), a Hessian soldier who came to the colonies in the 1750s, fought in the French and Indian War, and settled down with a Maryland girl named Caroline. The family also lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and were early settlers of Henderson County, Kentucky. Lawrence Roelofson Jr. (1762?-1855) was a Cumberland Presbyterian "exhorter." He married Mary Smith (1779?-1862) in 1795 and the family had twelve children: Sarah, Elizabeth, Moses, Margaret, Esther, Tabitha, Ann, Martha, Mary Jane, William Anderson, and Thomas Smith. They moved to Illinois in 1821.

An 1829 pamphlet, A Narrative of the captivity and suffering of Isaac Knight from Indian Barbarity, chronicled a 1793 event. Isaac Knight (1782-?), son of Lawrence Roelofson Junior's daughter Ann, was kidnapped in Washington County, Pennsylvania by a group of Pottawottamies and Kickapoos. Recently vaccinated for smallpox, he suffered a minor version of the illness but passed it to his captors. He was held for two and a half years, then escaped with the help of a river boat captain.

Lawrence Senior's daughter, Anne Roelofson (1811-1852), died of cholera on the Oregon trail; the rest of her family continued on and settled in Oregon. She was married to John Tucker Scott (1809-?) and the Scott family had twelve children: Lawrence, Mary Frances, Abigail Jane, Margaret Ann, Harvey Whitefield, Catherina Amanda, Harriet Louise, John Henry, Edward, Sarah Maria, William Neill, and Alice. Abigail (1834-1915) married Benjamin Duniway-Abigail Scott Duniway became a noted writer and a pillar of the Oregon suffrage movement. Her brother, Harvey W. Scott (1838-1910), edited and then published the primary newspaper of the state, the Oregonian.

Anne's sister, Esther Roelofson (1806-1874,) married Neill Johnson (1802-1851) and they also emigrated to Oregon and settled in McMinnville. Esther had twelve children including a son, Lysanus Berry (1840-1895), who married Rebecca Jane Hall. One of the Johnson daughters, Sarah Frances, married Thomas Porterfield Jack (1821-1906) and they lived in Marion County. Another, Mary Ann, married Benjamin Franklin Hall and they also emigrated to Marion County; their son James J. Hall (1871-1947) owned a photographic studio in Woodburn and was mayor of the town 1918-1924.

The Roelofson-Johnson clan of Oregon began reunion gatherings in 1907. Many were held at the Jack farm near McMinnville, others at campgrounds at Woodburn and Seaside.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of portraits of family members, primarily 19th century, and group portraits or snapshots from the Oregon clan's family gatherings, which began around 1900 and continued through the 1950s. The portrait collection includes tintypes and has good examples of the genre. Many of the reunion images have been attributed to photographer J.J. Hall, a member of the clan, on the basis of the quality and annotations.
