Background Sketch

The Eugene Print Collection is an artificial assemblage of commercial and amateur vintage prints related to Eugene, Oregon, its environs and people. The collection was established in the 1970s and augmented in 2005. In addition to views of significant structures, the collection includes aerial photographs and vistas of the city. An album from the John Straub collection shows the University of Oregon campus and social activities. Several images depict the historic Shelton-McMurphey house and the family that lived there. Interior shots of the Booth-Kelly mill in Springfield are included in the collection, with a series of views of the Willamette River and the Mill Race.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of vintage silver prints, tintypes, cabinet prints, copy prints and copy negatives. Many of the images cannot be attributed to a known photographer. One numbered series was produced by an unidentified commercial photographer, labeled "Unknown Eugene Photographer." Images from the Straub album are attributed to Vincent Straub, based on the images identified in the 1902 Webfoot. The collection has been digitized in full.

Related materials

As the campus is a significant part of the city of Eugene, many related images are held in the photographic collections of the University Archives. Other early images of Eugene are held in the WPA section of the Print Collection, PH035. A panorama taken from Fairmount hill is located at PH286-003. Separate collections exist for the Winter Studio, and for Abell & Welch, who visited Eugene to take portrait of UO students.
