What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is the online course management system at the University of Oregon. It is designed to provide a collection of tools to help instructors and students supplement, and sometimes replace, face to face learning.

In August, 1999, the UO Library introduced a new service for UO faculty -- a "web-based course management system" from Blackboard, Inc. It was originally called "CourseInfo". It's an ideal product for creating and deploying online courses and supplemental class materials. Not only does it offer a rich set of course management tools, but it can be used without any knowledge of HTML. You can access the UO Blackboard server at
