NOTES:Traces much of the music of the Middle East and Balkans back to the spread of Mohammedanism. Introduces such instruments as the oud, santur, qanun, cimbalum and dumbek, and demonstrates the concepts of highly ornamented melodic lines and asymetrical rhythms.

SUMMARY: Documentary on an orchestra of meddahatts, Algerian women musicians who customarily entertain gatherings of women, who traditionally are not allowed to mix with men. When these orchestras play, women remove their veils and dance. Though they are much in demand, the orchestras are held in low social esteem. The orchestra portrayed includes Sid Ahmen and Amin, a gay male couple nobody seems to question their presence in this exclusively female world.
