Explanation of USGS DEM Files
 

The digital elevation model (DEM) files on this site are raw DEMs.  More information is available about this format here.  This data is no longer being updated.  For current elevation data, please see the National Elevation Dataset, also downloadable at Seamless.

ArcView 3x
1. Unzip your file
2. Open ArcView, enable Spatial Analyst Extension
3. Go to File -> Import Data Source -> From the Drop down, Choose USGS DEM
4. You might then be promted to save your grid in a temp folder, that is okay.
5. Then go to Theme -> Convert to Grid

ArcCatalog
1. Unzip your file
2. Open ArcCatalog
3. Navigate to the file you unzipped
4. Right click on the file, Export to other data source
5. Export to ArcInfo Grid

ArcMap ArcInfo 8.3
1. Unzip your file
2. Open ArcToolbox
3. Go to Conversion Tools -> Import to Raster -> DEM to Grid

ArcMap 9
1. Unzip your file
2. Open ArcMap, then open ArcToolbox
3. Go to Conversion Tools -> Import to Raster -> DEM to Grid

Note: These are raw USGS DEMs. Check to make sure your file is designated as a dem. If not, you will need to rename your file to include .dem
