America: History and Life is the main database for finding citations & abstracts for U.S. History articles or book reviews.

Historical Abstracts provides citations & abstracts for articles and books covering historical topics outside of the U.S. (and Canada).

JSTOR provides full-text access to back issues of 44 major history journals (and is also useful for interdisciplinary and area studies work).

ArchiveGRID is a finding guide for manuscript collections around the world (but primarily in the United States). This is the best place to begin a search for archival material, but not the only place you'll need to look.

Encyclopedias and dictionaries are a useful place to gather background information on your topic.
