What We Do
The Serials Team is responsible for serials cataloging and database maintenance of serial records in the online catalog. This includes:
- Cataloging of serials in all formats and Roman-alphabet languages
- Creation and some maintenance of check-in records
- Creation of item records
- Creation and maintenance of OCLC local data records that show summary holdings information
- Closing out of records for titles that have ceased
- Creating and maintaining links between related serial records
- Determining whether a publication is a monograph or a serial
- Recataloging of titles from monograph to serial records
- Retrospective conversion of serials
- Database maintenance related to serial titles
- Bibliographic problem-solving
- Answering questions about local and national serials cataloging policies and practice
- Providing assistance in the interpretation of serials records as needed
Serials include publications such as journals, magazines, newspapers, and other publications issued on a regular, fairly frequent basis (e.g. annual directories, biennial reports).
Cataloging and database maintenance of non-Roman alphabet serials is performed in the team specializing in the appropriate language.
